Restore 64bit Windows Image Backup from 32bit installation

Greetings all,

My installed OS is Vista Ultimate 32bit. I think to make a complete pc restore of a Vista Ultimate 64bit installation. I made the 64bit installation via Vista Ultimate so its a Windows Image Backup.

I am unsure as to which disc to use to make this restore. Should I use the 32bit or 64bit disc?

I googled and found the following info:

All is clear except for the essential and most relative info found in the note to number 5:

If you are restoring a 64-bit system using a 32-bit Complete PC backup or a 32-bit system using a 64-bit Complete PC backup and have more than one operating system installed, you should not select an operating system. If an operating system is selected by default, clear the selection by clicking a blank area of the window, and then click .

I think that I should use the 32bit disc because my present installation is 32bit.

I am not sure that I understand you so let me say this and correct me where I am wrong:

1. It does not matter if I use a 32 or 64 bit disc to make a complete pc restore from a Windows Image Backup.

2. If I do make a complete restore I will lose everything that is now on that partition. It doesn't matter if the complete restore is of a 32 or 64 bit image, everything now present on that partition will be lost.

Point number 2 is already known to me. My question is does it matter which disc I use to make the restore. I don't think it does as I will be first choosing repair, and then comes the option of making a complete pc restore.

Thanks for the link but I am not thinking of copying or deleting the Windows Image Backup. I am concerning a complete pc restore.

However the link is very much appreciated as I did think it better to move the backup to the external hdd where my other backups are made.

What I am saying is if you have 32 bit. You can only replace with 32 bit, image or CD
If you want to change, you must format your drive. You cannot just put a 64 image or cd on a former 32 bit drive. There must be a complete format.

If you do a restore, you must have everything backed up or its gone.
Especaially 32 to 64

I understand that I will necessarily lose everything that is presently stored on the partition.

What I am not sure of is if you are saying that I must first format it, then make the complete pc restore. In other words, I must make TWO operations. And, the reason for the TWO operations is that I would be restoring a 64bit OS to a partition that previously had on it a 32bit OS.

I recently made a Windows complete pc restore and I remember Windows giving a warning that I would lose everything and I was advised to make a backup. If I remember correctly there was only ONE operation, namely, pressing OK and the restore started. However, the restore was a 32bit OS to a partition that previously housed a 32bit OS.

Let me put it this way
You CANNOT put a 64 bit on a hard drive that had 32 unless you format first.
So this is what you must do, first format the hard drive.
Then install the 64bit.


I agree if you back up a 32 bit you can put it on a hard drive that had 32 bit.
Im sure that you want the best running computer that you can have, then follow the tutorial that I gave you in my first post.

It is called a clean install.

Yes the format makes you lose everything, but the format can be done as part of the installation procedure. The CD will ask what type of install you choose advanced, and it gives a format option. Just back up first.
