Solved Icon lost for Downloads-folder

Hello,

I accidentally moved my Downloads-folder to the USB stick. After reverting it back to its original place, the familiar greenish icon for the folder was replaced with a standard yellow one.

I tried to fix the situation with a Rebuild_Icon_Cache.bat without luck - in fact, this action renamed the folder from "Lataukset" to "Downloads" (I've got a Finnish language Vista, so "Lataukset" means "Downloads" :)).

I have had the same situation a couple of times before (with my parents PC), and the only remedy I remember is to reinstall the OS. I don't really want to do that, so I'm asking is there an alternative way to fix the situation and revert the current "Downloads" folder to the original "Lataukset" folder with a green icon?

I've tried the Icon Cache Rebuild with no luck (sadly it renamed the folder from my language to English).

I may try the system restore, but I'm a bit sceptical about it, as it didn't work 100% the last time I tried it (got some error messages on start-up).

The following article explains how to move shell folders like Downloads properly so things work after they are moved (it's different than moving normal folders): http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/107990-personal-user-shell-folders-move-location.html.

If the folder is beige instead of greenish, then it is no longer a shell folder and that needs to be corrected for things to work right. Here's the procedure for that: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/90705-personal-user-shell-folders.html.

Richard: Unfortunately I had the system restore turned off on my machine, so I can't do that. :(

I wonder what happens if I accidentally delete the Downloads/Pictures/Links folder in Vista? Is the only remedy for this a System Restore?

The very simple remedy for accidentally deleting that folder would be to go to the Recycle Bin, find the folder, and restore it to where it was when it was deleted. If you mean the primary shell folder itself, then the procedures I just mentioned may also be required - I'm not certain. Anoter procedure to create a new Shell Folder replacement may also be needed. Besides that, System Restore does not affect data files and as these are data files, System Restore would not resolve you deleting them. You would need to use Recovery Programs to hopefully recover some of the deleted information (but there's a good chance you would lose some of it).
