Solved Too many gadgets windows sidebar..help

Hi,

My wife (honest!) is having problems with too many gadgets (date)..probably furry feet from our cat on the keyboard has duplicated this gadget. The system just locks up when I try and delete one of them (in properties or on screen). I have stopped it starting with windows, but I believe the wife would like it back with just one date gadget. Please can anybody suggest a cure?

Hi Mick,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Try resetting the sidebar to the default gadgets (or better on second thought, remove all the open gadgets and clear the sidebar) - that should clear up the problem and allow you to once again add or delete gadgets as you please. Go to the Control Panel and choose Control Panel Home and then select Personalization and Appearance. It will say Windows Sidebar Properties near the bottom and click on that title. Click on the button near the bottom to View Running Gadgets and remove them all (except the date if it is there). That will put you to a blank sidebar with just the date, but if any default gadgets still remain, you can delete all but the date and you should be set. If date wasn't in the opened gadget listing, then after deleting all the active ones, the sidebar should be empty (or have some default gadgets you should now be able to delete) and you just need to add the date one back and you'll be good to go.

If you right click on the gadget and exit, doesnt that work?
It should work if you mean only duplicate gadgets.

I had to rename the .ini file, it the system then recreated a new default one. Nothing else would work, the system just froze when trying to delete the gadgets individually.

That's not in any of the procedures I examined and I'd never heard of it before - but I see that it makes sense (as a similar process works for other types of errors that aren't that different). Still, I believe it would have taken me a while before I thought to suggest that. I'm impressed that you did and it worked and I'm happy that all is now well. Congratulations!
