Can't see external hard disks

I have a Verbatim 320Gb and a WD 300 Gb hard disk which do not show up when I plug them into the USB port on my Toshiba laptop.

Is there some way to find & reformat these disks?

Hi,

Go to control panel,
Administrative tools,
Computer management

Disk management.

Look for the two drives or one at a time as connected.

There you will be able to configure & format the drives as seen.

Nothing there, please post your device manager screen showing the USB devices.

Have you ever accessed these drives on this PC before?

Does the system go through the installing/ found USB devices routine in the task bar?
Did the system install any drivers at any time for them etc?

I have used these drives on this computer before. It did not try to install new hardware when I plugged the HDD into the USB port. I'm sure it must have installed drivers when I first used the disk, but I can't remember.

OK,

It looks as though your USB drivers are not functioning correctly!

Please post back your make, model, Windows version & SP status for the PC.

If you know where to locate manufacturers updated drivers go there & update your USB drivers (minimum).

Do not install Microsoft ones as generally they do not work correctly.

I've plugged the drive into the fan/hub and directly into the computer's USB ports - no difference.

OK,

Not much listed there for the Chipset or USB.

Have you installed any "Microsoft update" drivers?

Go to device manager & open USB devices like the picture earlier & plug in both disks. Now when the drives are plugged in uninstall what pops up. Reboot.

Plug the disk back in & let the system go through the "Finding & installing process. Do this for both drives.

Now what do you get?
