Solved MS Office, UAC and The User Service failed this Logon

hasiel

Member
Here is my problem. This happened after I used my Sony Vaio Recovery disks, reformating my hard drive and re-installing Vista Home Premium.

Please keep in mind that MS Office will only work on my main account (Administrator) if I have UAC turned off.

1. Can create a second Admin account but cannot open it. Message is "The user profile failed the logon".

2. Only can use MS Office if UAC setting is tuned off in my Administrator account.

I get a message if UAC is on that to install Office.
I tried the Office diagnostic tool and re-installed MS Office.

3. If I have UAC turned off, I can access the second Admin account that I created, and i can access MS Office programs in either accounts.

I tried ms fixit but didn't work and did restore to an earlier time. I tried chkdsk and sfc scannow to no avail.

Help is appreciated

Hi hasiel,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Have you updated Vista with all the updates and both Service Packs since you re-installed? If not, please do that before proceeding as that could very easily be the problem.

First, let's address the "User Profile Failed the Login" problem. Please go to: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/1...-failed-logon-user-profile-cannot-loaded.html and follow the instructions to see if that resolves the problem.

I'm not quite sure why you're having these UAC problems - but let's see how the above two suggestions work before proceeding with that issue (since they may resolve things - though I honestly don't think so and that something else will be required).

I hope this helps. If the problem persists, please describe anything different from what you did.

Good luck!

Hello Lorien
thxs for your quick response.

Re: Your questions
1.Have you updated Vista with all the updates and both Service Packs since you re-installed? If not, please do that before proceeding as that could very easily be the problem.

My response: Yes everything is up to date including reinstall of SP2

2.First, let's address the "User Profile Failed the Login" problem. Please go to: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/13...ot-loaded.html and follow the instructions to see if that resolves the problem.

I have viewed, studied and considered the above link over the past few days, and am afraid if I delete the suggested settings for my main Administrator account, I will not be able to logon to my computer at all, and will lose all my established settings for this account.

What is your view of what I say?
thanks
Hasiel

Difficult question. I have a few thoughts, just not exactly solutions at the moment.

UAC is obviously the trigger. I would possibly consider that your case of user profile message is also different the normal fix. However, I don't necessarily think it will cause any harm if done on the other account, the one that cannot be relied on anyway.

Here are my thoughts: Something has some sort of permissions error. When UAC is on, this error, and UAC, locks you out, and generates the user account message. However, when UAC is off, although the permissions are set wrongly, the permissions are not set too wrongly, and an Admin account is enough to convince Windows to grant access, without UAC getting in the way.

This is going to be fiendishly difficult to track down. Your reinstall error message is not very specific. I can think of several different messages that give this advice, Side by Side errors, .dll errors, association errors to name but a very few. Also, this permissions thing I was being vague on. It could be in the registry, in the file system. Perhaps in the WinSxS structure. etc. etc.

Can you please copy word for word your exact Office error message?

Also, you said that SFC did not help. Detected no problems, or was unable to fix them automatically? I need you to re-run SFC following the instructions below:

Please run steps 1, 2A, 3 (about 15 minutes), 4, 5, and then Step 1 from the top yellow box, but only follow this last one if Integrity Violations were found. Please upload the new sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop. System Files - SFC Command

Thanks, and good luck!

Richard

Richard:

Here are the answers to your questions:

Can you please copy word for word your exact Office error message?
"Microsoft Office Word has not been installed for the current user. Please
Run setup to install the application."

After running Sony Vaio Care (like Norton Utilities), I now have access to my second account, the first time it loaded, a message, said that a temporary profile was created as the original was corrupted). I then tried to access my MS Office and both accounts with UAC turned on, and there was a short flash of the MS Word or Ms Excel logo screen, then nothing loaded, and no message.
I tried MS Office Diagnostics and would not complete as a screen came up asking me for the path to a 012Conv.msi folder, that I couldnt find on my hard drive, nor on the original MS Office desk (maybe because I didnt know where or how to look).

Also, you said that SFC did not help. Detected no problems, or was unable to fix them automatically? I need you to re-run SFC following the instructions below:

I have not completed all what you suggested I do. I have included the sfcdetails.txt file, and pics of the msi folder message and sfc results.

I really appreciated your kind help,
Terry

It is quite late in my time zone. I shall give you a quick run down, and deal with it properly tomorrow, if you don't mind. It would be a big help for me.

SFC has reported nothing to worry about. Only settings.ini. This is changed because you may have apps installed on your Sidebar, or installed without your knowing at the factory. It is perfectly safe to ignore. If you want to read more on this moot point, see here: The SFC.exe command reports Settings.ini file errors in the CBS.log file after you add gadgets to the Windows Vista Sidebar by using the Sysprep tool and an Autounattend.xml file

That screenshot is one of the errors I had expected. It usually indicted an error in the C:\Windows\Installer folder, but your case is slightly different from the norm, and so I need to think about this tomorrow, as you are a slightly different case.

Thank you for being so polite and patient, Terry, it makes such a difference to us,

Richard

Richard:
One more new happening that I discovered after reading somewhere on MS minutes ago.

By searching say excel.exe and running as administrator from the search or from a shortcut I created on my desktop, the Excel program opens successfully, the same for Word.

Thanks again till tomorrow.

I meant to actually post this in my original post and looking back......I forgot! Do you see how this makes sense with the permissions issue? Permissions are locked down in an unusual way, so that you do not have permissions to access them and UAC completely blocks you.

However, when UAC elevates you, you can view it. Also, contrary to popular belief, UAC can elevate you to many different permission levels, as any programmer will know - trying to make their application run on the lowest level.

However, your previous message makes more/less sense to me. Let us assume that the C:\Windows\Installer\{subfolder} has a permissions issue, such that without UAC you do not have access, hence the message asking for a copy of the file with read permissions, otherwise it works. However, there are two slightly flaws in this solution:

  1. You said that you searched and could not find the file anywhere. Do you mind if I re-search with a far more powerful tool so that we know we are looking in Access is Denied folder, hidden, and system folders? It is also far faster, and will then produce a nice log for me.
  2. I have never seen an issue in C:\Windows\Installer that a re-install of the program has not fixed, as a re-install will remove and re-create these sub folders. This could be a bit of a problem, and hint at this all being a wild goose chase, but one that needs to be followed in order to find more leads.
OTLI.gif
OTL - Download or alternative link here and here to the Desktop. Make sure it is called OTL.exe, and nothing else.

Download OTL to your Desktop and run it.

  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:
/md5start
O12Conv.msi
/md5stop

  • Click the None button, followed by the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file, and post them here.
Thanks!

Richard

Hmmm. Just re-read the thread for good measure, and it came to good meansure. Two more thoughts:

It is not actually looking in C:\Windows\Installer. This means nothing. When not found, it sometimes goes back to installation media location etc. etc. but it might just mean something/make a difference later.

It is trying to install the Compatibility Pack, and not anything else. Is this the same for both Excel and Word?

Forgotten my last two points. Shall post them when I remember them...

Ah yes! I have thought of another way that perhaps it could be in the C:\Windows\Installer folder even after a re-install.

Perhaps Word/Excel perform some on the fly last minute installation into the C:\Windows\Installer folder. With UAC on, it works nicely, without it on, it does not work, and so keeps re-doing it. Even if you first ran with UAC, it will not have access to it or detect it, and so will re-do it, and fail. Hence why a re-install has not fixed it, and then the below message quoted by you makes sense:

"Microsoft Office Word has not been installed for the current user. Please
Run setup to install the application."

Also, I have not forgotten about your User Profile issues. It just doesn't quite fit into your Office issue, and we need to carry on with this Office issue, to see what the problem turns out to be, before we can make a connection between the two.

I think you have already noticed, but this is all clever speculation, and not hard fact yet. Hopefully we will have hard fact soon!

Good news Richard:
I found the answer to my problem with MS Office.
I adapted what was suggested here to Vista: http://www.vistax64.com/vista-gener...-error-not-been-installed-current-user-4.html

and deleted the opa12.dat file.

When I loaded MS Word, the MS Activation screen appeared, did a connect, said I was successfully activated, and all Office programs are now working like they should.

Thanks for all the effort that you put into it for me and other viewers.

Regards, Terry
