Emptying recycle bin really slow

If I have a large number of items in my recycle bin, and I attempt to empty the recycle bin, the time it takes to do this is really slow. As an example I have 1065 items in my recycle bin and I attempt to empty the bin, the time it takes is about 20 minutes.

I have a fast hard disk, a fast CPU, and I can hardly believe Vista should operate so slowly. I have tried to defragment the volume but it seems to do very little in decreasing the time. The volume is the main C: volume, its total size is 224 GB of which about 73 GB is free.

It does seem as if Vista x64 Ultimate should work faster than it does in permanently deleting files.

Any suggestions to speed up permanent deletion of files would be most appreciated.

Welcome
The most obvious, and not trying to be a wise guy, is to delete more often. When not so full
A second possilbity is to delete when nothing else is running; scheduled tasks, anti virus scans etc.

Maintain and give special attention to the tut on optimize.

Does this empty the recycle bin much faster than the standard Windows Vista recycle bin ? '

Taking 20+ minutes to empty a few thousand files on a modern system with a fast hard disk is not my idea of good programming, and yet this is the speed of the standard Windows Vista recycle bin on my system. I would think something closer to 20 seconds rather than 20 minutes would be right instead. As a programmer I still can not accept the idea that physically deleting directory entries on Windows Vista x64 Ultimate could be so slow.

Really ? So you never first deleted a folder, with sub-folders, which contained a few thousand files. And then emptied the recycle bin some time later ?

You must not be a developer then. Since it is often the situation that a top-level folder, with its subfolders, containes many small files when using library in programming development.

I know what you mean! I have need to delete thousands of files sometimes! How many mbs are you trying to delete. I have never really found it to be quite so slow. I usually watch it empty my Recycle Bin in about 3 big blocks or so. Are you getting a loading bar, as things are deleted, or just waiting and waiting while things slowly empty from the Recycle Bin?

I can be deleting just a few megabytes if the files are small, or it can be tens of megabytes for larger entries. I am not seeing a loading bar, I am just seeing the normal progress bar and it is very slowing moving as the individual files are being deleted. I can click on details to see the what is being deleted but it is just so slow sometimes. I have no idea what poor programming takes 20+ minutes minutes to delete a few thousand file entries. Maybe I have something set where I am telling Vista that the hard disk area for the files themselves must be zeroed out, because that is the only thing I can think of that would cause Vista to work so slow in just freeing up directory entries.
