Problem with Windows Explorer Freezing when clicking Taskbar

Hey there :)

I have a Toshiba Windows Vista laptop for about 2 years. For some reason, whenever I click on my taskbar, it freezes and says Windows Explorer is not responding. My other problem is that I notice that the volume icon is missing on my tray, and that whenever I restart the Windows Explorer because of it's not responding, I use the volume control on my laptop, and then my taskbar freezes again. It does sound complicated I know. If there is anyone that can help me it would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hello there Hex,

Let me first cover the issue of the volume control not being on the taskbar. If you use the windows volume control and the little icon is not there, you can get it back by:

Right clicking on the taskbar and selecting properties. Then select the Notification area tab. Ensure that "volume" is checked in the system icons group box.

As for Windows Explorer freezing, my suggestion would be to make sure you don't have tons of background programs running in the system tray that you don't use. Also, having many windows opened can cause the taskbar to get bogged down in some cases.

The Windows Explorer thing happens to me every now and again. It is annoying. I usually find that it's because of the system doing something.

Well I have tried the suggestion on right clicking the taskbar and selecting properties and all for the volume, but the volume is gray, so there's no way I would be able to enable that icon to work. :( This is very complicating!

My guess is that your PC has been infected with spyware and stuff which are affecting explorer.exe's performance. it happens to my laptop a lot too.
I suggest to use a malware removal, i highly recommend doing a scan using Malware Anti bytes, it is an amazing free tool which has helped me a lot until now.

This worked for me. anyone else this works for please reply here...

I went to device manager, (type device in your search bar in the windows start menu)
Then clicked the + on "Sound, video and game controllers".

Next DOUBLE click on your audio device and click properties. Select the Driver Tab, then click "Roll Back Driver"

This will downgrade to your original driver from the apparently faulty updated one and hopefully solve your problem like it did for my Toshiba Satellite A505.
