access denied when attempting restore

I use vista home premium and use the vista provided backup software.
I backed up my data on a Linkstation.
I recently had to reinstall my operating system and I am trying to access the backup data on the linkstation.
When using the vista restore programs advanced restore option I can select the linkstation and the proper file but I get the access denied error.

I have searched for the solution but can;t quite seem to find something that works.

Right click on the vista restore program icon and see if there is a selectionname "Run as Administrator", if there is select it and go from there.

That is not an option, I am running the computer as an administrator, the problem lies with the external backup device, since I made that back up with another computer I need to change the permissions on the external back up device or get this computer to recognize it as a valid back up source

I have tried all the standard take ownership procedures. This is more of an issue with the windows back program up not recognizing the back data since the data was done on another computer and is on an external device.
