Vista home basic back ups

My computer is telling me I have low disc space on volume D.. it is apparently backing up the first of the month but doesn't clear off the old one just keeps adding to it. I tried to do a back up to a disc but it keeps telling me that the back up failed because there isn't enough space when it makes a shadow copy. I have vista home basic.. in the vista for dummies book it says that making shadow copies and automatic back ups are not supposed to be available on home basic.
How do I stop the computer from backing up by itself? clear off the D partition and be able to do a back up to discs?
I had to have it reformatted about a month ago and all the files I had burned to disc before now show up as blank on here:cry: ..... I am not a very tech person but can do basics with instructions.. have to tell you though I hate this computer.. have had nothing but trouble with it since I got it.
it is an E-machine model 3609 32 bit system 200GB Vista home basic with service pack 2
Any help would be appreciated..
Thanks
Kathy

Hi Kathy
Get rid of that sad face. Read this and you will understand what is happening
Recover Files with Previous Versions (Volume Shadow Copy) in Vista Home Basic and Premium with ShadowExplorer

You can use this in lieu of shadow copy
http://www.shadowexplorer.com/
http://www.recipester.org/Recipe:Use_Volume_Shadow_Copy_in_Vista_Home_Basic_29017683

You can use this for backups.

I am not sure if you can turn if off in Home Basic butI would use disc cleanup to get rid of the copies.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76073-disk-cleanup.html
I doubt of properties serves the same function in Basic as it does in the versions with more features but, see if this can be done
Right click the computer, on start menu and choose properties.
. On the left-hand side panel you will see a listing for System Protection Choose the System Protection tab and uncheck the drive that is set for “Automatic Restore Points”.

Hi Richard.. Thanks sorry have been away.. but I think this is too complicated for me to try on my own. but I will study it some more and see if the fear goes away...this really doesn't seem too simple to me and too easy to really screw things up..

lol well it did explain some things... so that was helpful.. ok what should I do first? if I tried to do the disc cleanup and could clear all the copies except one off I should be able to do a disc back up then right? then shut off the shadow copy thing but does that mean it won't do restore points at all anymore? and to me that seems important or is it not as important as I think... or would it be better to download one of those programs that you suggested? am not exactly sure I understand what they do...
thanks,
Kath

Ok not a problem, that is because you have home basic. In lieu of that
Now

Turn off System Restore, boot; then turn it back on and make a restore point manually.
You are without protection until the new restore point is made.
Shut down the computer then boot again.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76332-system-restore-point-create.html

Be sure you uderstand how this is done and the small risk involved. You have no system restore until you make a new SR point manually.
This is all necessary because this is Home Basic

If things go the way they should, your drive will be clean. You can make your backups.

Now the bad news. With home basic, you cannot stop the copies from being made, unless you turn off SR and that is not the way to go.

In my first post I have presented methods that will allow backups even with the limitations imposed by Home Basic.

Hi.. nope haven't done it yet..lol.. but close.. this window popping up is driving me crazy.. a question.. probably a dumb one but....do I click both c & d letters that I no longer want restore points on or just the d one?

I knew there was another one.. at the top of those links it says you should run some program to look for registry errors first.. should I be downloading that and doing it first?
Thanks again
Kath

My Computer

You just want to stop the back ups on the D drive.

Where does it say about registry?

at the top of the page for both the links for restore and create restore points.. maybe it's just an ad.. sorry..
do I have to go back and enable the restore point thing again after I've created a restore point? 1 st thing in the morning..
Night and thanks..

My Computer

Yes, you turn off SR (you are without protection now) to remove all the shadow copies that were made.

Boot the computer

Now turn it back on and make a new point, so you will be protected, again.
You have protection, but the shadow copies will begin to accumulate, again. That is one of the limitations of Home Basic.

You can use the drive in the way it was intended and make SR points, which can really help when problems arise, but will also make shadow copies.
In lieu of that method, you can turn SR off (lose that protection) and have use of the backup drive for whatever purpose that you need.

An alternate plan is that you can make a new partiton and use that for your backups.

However, in the next step, I can lead you to software, that you can use to make backups and have it on an external dirive.

Morning.. well it didn't work.. the d drive is still full and now it won't let me create a restore point because there is insufficient storage space.. so in both d & c drive it says there are no restore points..

Morning Kathy, it should have worked. Can you just delete the drive manually?

no clue.. I doubt it.. it came with the system...I wouldn't have a clue where to start on that.. did I mention before I hate this computer? lol thing is.. this is only since it was reformatted.. didn't have a problem before cuz it just wouldn't do a back up.. just an error msg..

My Computer

Go to the computer icon on desktop>left click>go to drive in question and delete.
Warning, be sure of what you are deleting, understand what is in each file that you delete.
Just delete files you understand, dont do anything to the drive.

What cofuses me is the fact that Shadow copies should have been removed when you turned off system restore. Are you sure that it was shut off?

k I don't have a computer icon on my desktop..lol but yes it was off.. when I hit system restore it said I should turn it on to create a restore point..and the little box came up are you sure you want to shut restore off and I said yes.. honestly.. this does not surprise me.. it's the computer from hell.. nothing works on it like it should.. never has.. thot after the reformat it would.. am thinking this is getting way out of my league though..but checked the files from computer and it just says back ups and dates..

My Computer

Delete a few of the older back up, enough to make room for SR.
