Defrag takes too long

I am out of town and I am working on a Vista 32bit machine and we have done a fresh install to eliminate some issues he had with the windows updater that ended up being unfixable. After the clean install and putting a few of his programs back I started the defrag and after 6 hours it was still going. It is a 200g drive that is about at 40% usage (183g actual and 111g free right now). I have ran the Vista defrag on many machines many times and have never seen it go that long even on a large drives with much more space usage. I have also ran the defrag from the CMD method and no luck there either since it appeared to be going long there also. I leave tomorrow so I want to leave him all set up but that is the last and only issue we have left to deal with so if anyone has any ideas and can quickly reply that would be great.

I have also ran the chkdisk also and all was fine and after it runs a while you can look in the task manager and it is using about 18k memory but has zero cpu usage.

In addition, before defrag, get off the net and do the maintenance. Clean temp files etc, disc cleanup (scan) etc.

Since posting I have found more issues with the defrag. I read to use the dfrg.inf file in the /windows/inf directory to re-install it and guess what..it isn't there! Unfortunately I do not another vista machine to get the file from and I simply lack the time required to fix this issue. I will try the defraggler program for him to use until I can get back down here.

This PC I am working on has so many random issues even with the fresh install so I believe there are motherboard or harddrive is failing. He has a new laptop so if it goes out he is covered until we can build him a new desktop. Thanks for the help!

Yeah, I've seen similar behavior when I used to run Vista. The vista defragger is well known to be slow and unreliable..can easily take a few hours on a drive and still not do the job properly. Its defrag algorithms are simply not up to the task of quick, efficient and
thorough defrags; the lack of proper reporting and monitoring options only aggravates the situation.

Ack, Shadowjk, you beat me to it. I also recommend defraggler, it's free, and a great program. If you're really on a time crunch, you can just run a quick defrag, though it may not be as thorough.

Yes Vista's defrag is a waste of time, you click defrag and it says it can take minutes or hours and you don't see anything.

As already mensioned I use Defraggler you can at least see a pictures of the drive and files so its something to watch and it takes about 15 minutes. I had Vista running for 4 hours the other day and it still didn't finish. ;)

You don't need to As long as you have got a Percentage you don't need a Table

That way you can see How Fragmented a Drive is
