My personal folder is missing from C:\users

Hi,

My personal folder is missing from C:\users
There is only default and public, if I try to create a new folder with my name a message appears saying that there is already a folder with that name.

I've done method one but it didn't open the missing folder, i did method two, clicked on "find target" and the folder appeared, however when I clicked restore default nothing happened, not even the: "the folder C:\users\... does not exist" message. I've also done method four, however everything seems to be in order.

Do I need to format my pc or is there another option? I also tried creating a new administrator account, logged on to that account and see if I could see that folder, but it wasn't there...

Hello Aurabreeze, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Do you mean your user profile folder, and not a user folder in it (ex: Music)?

If so, did you do anything like delete the user account, get a user profile log in error, try to move the user profile folder, etc.....

Hi,

Yes I'm reffering to my user profile folder, not the folders in it. I didn't delete the account or move any folders, I did however change the account name, on the startup menu used to appear my first and last name but I changed it, now only the first name appears...

When you change a user account name, it will not change the name of the C:\Users\(user-name) folder. Instead it only changes the user name in the Start Menu and at log on. Both names are now tied to the user account.

If you were able to log in to that account, then your C:\Users\(first-last name) folder should still be there. It may have been hidden.

Open a elevated (run as administrator) command prompt, then copy and paste the command below in it and press enter to see if that may unhide it for you.

attrib +r -s -h %USERPROFILE% /S /D

I did that and it didn't work. It actualy said that it was incorrect...

I also believe that it may be hidden, because if i go to C:\users and try to create a new folder with the first and last name it won't let me, it says that this folder already exists, and when I did method two of "Personal user folder - restore missing folder" and clicked find target, the folder appeared, and was also showing in the left menu. But if i try to acess it trough c:\users it's not there, just default and public.

The message was: the parameter format is incorrect... I've translated it because the pc's language is portuguese.

I did that but still no show, in fact the defauld user folder is one of the hidden folders because it appears faded

Did you right click on the command prompt shortcut and click on "Run as administrator" before using the command?


Does the new administrator account that you created show up in C:\Users?

If none of the above works, and you have a retail copy of Vista, then you might consider trying a repair install to see if that may help.

Yes I ran the command as administrator, and I used the command exactly as mentioned above. What I translated was the error message for you because it appeared in portuguese.

You might go ahead and try the repair install if you like. If the account is still there and only hidden, it should be able to restore it to display again in the C:\Users folder.
