Solved Cant open vista with my password

Vista Pro
hi folk's,ran avast'which immediately told me the memory was corrupt. asked to restart computer to do a deep scan. but it wont let me put in the password to start the pc,i restarted the pc tapped f-8 to safe mode but safe mode wont let me start.the pc with my password, i am sending this message on my wifes laptop as i dont know how to get into my pc any suggestuins would be appreciated.thanks

Thanks theog, bare foot kid, for your reply's, did ckeck the tutorial that brink did very informative, but i did have the two recovery disc's that i had made when i first bought the computer, i installed the first disc, and it ask's, recovery from hard disc or cd-disc, chose cd-disc, then advance options, which gives the choice,
computer checkup,
microsoft repair tool,
system restore,
file backup program,
system recovery,
factory reset,
I tried repair tool, but it said was unable to repair,so then i tried system restore which seems to have done the job, everything seems to be working fine,thanks again patch41.
