vanishing drives

Howdy Folks:

Happy 1st. & 4th. of July to one and all.

Got a bit of a problem. Every so often - and lately with a great deal more frequency - I lose my CD/DVD drive. I insert a disk and autoplay fails to open. Go to Computer and there is no E:/ drive shown. I can cure it by running system restore but that's a pain in the posterior. Any helpful hints on how to pin this drive?

I'm running Vista Home premium on a Dell E520 with 2 Gb RAM and 288 Gb HD which is about half full. This never occurs with C:/, D:/, or G:/ drives

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Try going to the manufactures site and download the latest drivers see if they make a difference. If you just right click and tell it to update the drivers it will most likely tell you you already have the latest so go to their site.

You may have to update the CD/DVD drive's firmware. I'd follow ilikefree's advice and go to the drive manufacturer's website and download the latest firmware.

One suggestion would be examing the data cable to insure that is plugged in all the way into the board as well as at the drive end of the cable. An older hardened up or simply loose data cable can make any drive simply disappear at times.
