Desktop Icons vanish

Hi

Some of my desktop icons vanish it looks like the one I don't use very often. In XP under control panel you can setup auto icon cleanup but in Vista I can find where it is.
Without restoring system did anyone know how can I recover icons and stop vanish in the future?
