BIG Problem!! *please read!!*

Heyy!
Ive got a big problem here!
So the other day my dad came home with a new motherboard and processor for me:party:
So i pulled my motherboard tray out and fixed it in, put the processor in and put my fan on top. plugged my main drive in and booted it up, looked fine...
got to the OS selection screen, hit vista and it started loading, then just after the green bars a flash of BsOD!
So i put my vista disc in and tried startup repair, it repaired it and everything was fine, tried to boot again and still the flash of BsOD... so now im thinking ill just put the old motherboard back in, i dont want to reinstall vista.

So this afternoon i plugged it in again and booted. After the vista logo i get a black screen instead of the log on screen, so i typed my password in and hit enter. Up comes my desktop, but only the top right corner i think, no taskbar, no icons, no sidebar. The resolution looks massive! Tried to open the nVidia control panel up but its not showing.

So now im stumped. I tried to boot in safemode and it boots, but i cant open nVidia control panel because its not started in safemode!!

i have it runnning next to me and theres hard drive activity...

Sorry its all jumbled and in one big chunk but im panicky here!

Daniel =(

Could you please tell us the make and model of your motherboard and processor, I think the original BSoD is likely to do with your BIOS settings but I could be wrong.

I think to fix the second problem you should attempt a system restore from the installation disk (http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html) to yesterday or before you got the MB and CPU.

I hope this is of use.

Heyy,
Thanks for the quick reply!
The new motherboard is an Asus P5LD2-TVM SE/S and the processor is an Intel core2duo @ 1.8GHz.

The old motherboard is an Asus P5RD2 - TVM/S and the processor is an Intel P4 hyperthreading @ 3.60, or 2.60, i cant remember.

system restore sounds the best option, but i have installed loads of programs since the last restore point *sometime back in 2009*, i know thats really bad but system restore keeps turning its self off!

Thanks, Daniel

I thought most programs created a restore point while they were being installed by default whether or not you system restore is turned on (I may be totally wrong, I'm not an expert in this field). It may just be worth check to see if you have a more recent restore and you could just attempt another repair install although whether or not it'll make any difference I don't know.

...or you could always restore to one of the many backups or system images you've created like a responsible Windows user... ;)

System restore is suppose to make a restore point automatically before installing a new program, but it will not if turned off.

Thanks Rich, I'll remember that next time.

You can check for restore points using the installation disk by using the previously mentioned tutorial.

Once you click on the system restore button it shows all of the restore points on your PC, new or old.

you have fitted a new motherboard , im assuming the chipset is differant , no ammount of fiddling with the os will help , neither will a repair install , you have to reformat and reinstall windows...pay close attention to the reformat bit , do that before running the windows install ,

you could try , but its not the problem , the problem is your chipset , it controls your pcie bus which controls your GPU , theres an outside chance that you may be able to install the chipset drivers if you can get into windows but i doubt it'll help anyways.................good luck :D

Installed in safemode and rebooted.. computers just booting now!

back to my native res of 1440x900!

Wahoo!!:D:D

Coming back to the re-install of vista. I think im going to buy a bigger hard drive when i get my new case, i was thinking 500GB, maybe 1TB if they are cheap!

And nice explination there :)

Aha, yes, i think my dad has something like that due to his job *network/server engineer*

I think it was ghost or something. We used it when i upgraded from 80GB to 160GB but i had to do startup repair then it would work! ;)

Im actually running my dual set-up now, 19" widescreen and standard 15" i use this when im gaming on TrackMania Nations Forever to monitor my temps and stuff. :D

Daniel =)

If you want a new hard drive you can get them for under £60 from Amazon now from both Seagate and Western digital.

Western Digital Caviar 1TB SATAII 64MB Cache 3.5-inch: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1 TB Hard Drive, SATA, 7200: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

You can probably get them a bit cheaper if you search around a little but it's not a bad price, especially considering this time last year they were all over £100 (I think).

I hope this is of use.

Oli

PS Congratulations on fixing your PC ;).

It depends on what imaging software you use and how you choose to make the image (just of one partition or of the whole drive). It's fairly self explanatory in most backup systems.
