chkdsk? Last night my Dell XPS computer, running Vista asked to run Check Disk and I clicked on yes. It would run the next time I booted up. Well it ran through 4 of 5 stages okay, although the 4th stage took quite a long time. But it came to a complete halt about 10% into the 5th stage and stayed that way. I let it run all night hoping there would be a report on the screen in the morning. It was right where it was when I turned in the night before...10% into stage 5. I shut it down (now I read that I am not supposed to do that). When I reboot, it comes up in chkdsk and gives me 10 seconds to press any button if I want to stop it from running chkdsk. But that doesn't work. I am pressing buttons left and right and it doesn't stop. Needless to say, I am in a cycle that I can't get out of. My computer is stuck in chkdsk, when I shut it down, it comes back up and starts running chkdsk all over again. It gives me 10 seconds to press any button in order to stop the process. That does not work and chkdsk begins all over again. Inevitably, it stops at the same place, 10% into stage 5. Help me please!
