since updating the driver for nvidia i can just about see the close button on the top right of the screen when open any programs and the scroll bar has disappeared.

Try the options that are on the moniter. Old moniters usually have screen adjustments and some LCD. If not go to Control panel and go to the NVIDIA control panel and go to adjust desktop size and position. You can even rotate the screen if needed.:D
