BSODs on Vista

Hi Guys didn't see an intro section for me to say hello so this is my first post. I have a m8 who is having blue screens both on startup and during running. I have run memtest and used some hirens boot cd memory testing programs and all seems fine. I have also done a surface scan on disk which is OK. I have collected the last few dumps and run them through the windows debug tool but I can't seem to pinpoint anything, although one pointed to hardware and another memory. I was wondering if any guru could have a look for me and give me some guidance. I have attached the logs in a rar file. Cheers guys.:D OOps I think it needs to be a zip. MMMM tried adding a zip file but it doesn't want to play. Am I doing summat wrong

.zip should work. Make sure it is not above 10mb. If there are only 1 or 2 dumps, then convert them to .txt from .dmp and one of us will look at them for you.

thanks for response Niemrio OK heres the latest. I went around there early last night and removed both the 1gig memory dimms. I replaced them with 1 known good stick and it crashed again last night. I will attach the last three minidumps in text format. the last one (06) points to hardware but am not sure. anyway here we go.

Thanks for response. They are .txt files so should open with notepad or any text viewer. I used debugging tools for windows to read the dumps and copied and pasted them intoo a notepad and then posted them. Hope this helps. BTW he had three moe crashes over the weekend . this is what he sent me in a note......
- 1st one had the message “page in unpaged area” which I have seen before but not recently, I dont think;
- 2nd one had no error message or hexa addresses at all
- 3rd one referred to nvlddmkm.sys and the address “8A2AC3C0 base at 8A20B000”

I wonder if bad RAM is causing the issue. Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder. Boot from the CD, and run at least 5 passes.

The dump files will really help. Either rename them from .dmp to .txt and then upload and I will rename back or email them to me and I will try to upload them. Remember that in emails .zip is unsafe so you need to rename it to something like .zipabc before sending. My email is "***" << I will edit this out once you have confirmed you have got it. Also, for how long did you run the Memory Tests?

Just to clear up memory guys. I ram memtest to each stick several times but it never showed any errors. I then removed both 1gig sticks and took a 1 gig stick out of another identical system and put that in. The system failed within an hour. I then swopped the 1gig into another slot and it still failed. Funny thing tho I have noticed on the very first bios screen on bootup where you would have the bios level it has a load of crap. just gibberish. I am going to flash the bios tomorrow morning as an eliminator. Again cheers guys for your support and interest in this issue.

Most of these mean a lot of different things, however the one issue that appears in all is drivers. I think that there is one driver that is causing all these problems. The drivers referenced are: (don't just launch at these drivers, wait for a better analysis)

There are a lot of drivers here. This is going to be a big case. However, many are 3rd party. It is normally 3rd party drivers that are the problem, and here is a good starting block. The Windows drivers such as hal.dll and ntkrnlpa.exe can be ignored, they are not the problem, they just received the blame.

This is almost certainly a driver issue. Therefore your best bet is to update all the drivers you can. This includes chipset, graphics card, sound card etc. I have included some general advice below: Also, you have a lot of drivers without timestamps which is something to think about, they should all have timestamps. This could however be caused by damaged minidumps, but I have had no problems analysing them. Also, most appear in more than one minidump, so I think we can rule this out.

These BSODs are probably caused by a bad driver in your case, however it could be caused by a driver. The most important thing to do is to update all of your drivers and run a quick scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. A quick scan will probably show a problem, though not cure it. If you suspect a virus tell me and I will teach you HiJackThis and Malwarebytes Full Scan! ;) Here is a list of thing to try:

  • Update all of the drivers you can. Please investigate and update the drivers for all the referenced drivers above, provided they are not Windows drivers.

  • N/A (Run Memtest86+ or another memory testing tool that came with your computer.)

  • Make sure all windows updates and service packs are installed. I know SP2 is installed




  • See if these BSODs occur in Safe Mode and report back.

  • See if there are any errors showing in Device Manager.
N/A (This problem may be caused by overheating, so can you please download GPU-Z and SpeedFan and write down/screenshot the temperatures of your cores/graphics card/hard disk.

I appreciate all the info. I have malwarebytes as its my favoured spyware programme. I will check the drivers . He did say he updated all of the drivers not long ago but this is clearly not the case. Would driver detective be a good programme to use to update all the drivers?
I have a copy of that or is it a case of going to the Mobo website and downloading all the latest drivers then all the I/O drivers individually. I did read that Nvidia has a driver issue in vista where people had to roll back to a really early driver to circumvent the problem.
He is at the point of ditching the system. I have told him we could go to windows 7 as a scratch install and this would probably solve it. Any thoughts? My first course of action will be to do the drivers tho. I am only here for a few days more as I go on hol on friday so want to resolve it before going. (thats if I can get off the ground :()

Malwarebytes is good but not as primary, as it is only cure, no prevension. I think you are running something else, but if not, run some normal antivirus such as MSE. On a computer there are thousands of drivers. I did notice lots of 2009/10 drivers, and I was going to comment on this, but then I forgot. Would you think of upgrading some virtual parallel port driver, even if you did not have a parallel port. That is why we tell you. However, the one thing you should really do is try to update all the referenced drivers. That is your first priority. Once you have done that, wait for a new crash and send me some new minidumps. Also, manufacturers website is better to update from than device manager. I have never used driver detective, but I am sure it works well; it is famous. I will ask some other members for their opinion. A clean install would probably fix it, but if any of the prohiferals are old, carefully make sure they will work with 7.
