validation failure

hi folks, new here so forgive if this is something which has been asked before.
i have a presario laptop which crashed. i tried to recover using the recovery disc set i made, and it told me there was an error on the disc, and wouldnt load. managed to recover vista using a recovery disc i bought, but obviously it asked to validate the vista installation. i cannot read the serial key label, all worn, so now have the black screen to look at. is there any way i can recover this, or do i need to buy a new copy of vista?
