Is external drive trying to boot?

I'm using HD from my old computer (XP) as an external drive on my Vista laptop. The HD has XP on it. When I power up it looks like the HD is trying to boot XP on top of my Vista and freezes the system. How can I avoid this attempted boot? Where should I place the jumper on the HD. Should it be Slave or what??

Thanks Bare Foot Kid.

Trouble is I can't access the disc to do anything with it as it doesn't show up anywhere. I have tried the jumper now in every possible position but still nogo.

Lots of files on there that I need and want to access.

Any further suggestions would be welcomed.

Hello again tottieon.

OK I get you now.

You mention "slave" so I can assume the drive in question is PATA/IDE and not SATA? The drive that you are booting Windows from, what is it?

Hi again Barefoot Kid

Sorry! I should have given the parameters.

I Installed the old HD in an IDE to SATA enclosure and connected to the laptop via USB. I have tried every available permutation of jumper positions but laptop won't even see the HD.

Laptop is running Vista. Old HD has XP on it.

Is it trying to boot XP over the Vista????

easy way is not to connect the external drive connected while booting the laptop :)
or you could remove the old boot partition by reformating it or remove the hiddern bootstrap files. then the bios will not try to select it on boot ( be cautious this may remove your data as well)
changing jumpers on the drive may not make any difference as some of the built in usb controllers ignore them, if your not sure use slave or cable select (cs) or check the instructions that came with the enclosure.

Hi Wheelsmith

Thanks for the suggestions but the problem is that I can't access the drive to do anything with it! It doesn't show up on the laptop.

ah i see you cant access and see the drive from explorer
can you see any reference to it from device manager and disk management/computer management?

a couple of things come to mind, your laptop bios may not see the drive size correctly as a usb device or hasnt enought power to run it when windows is booted and manageing resources. a bios update may fix that.
it could be a drive label/path conflict, you cant have 2 c:/ running at same time and windows hasnt automaticly changed it. you can assign that yourself in disk management.
look into those for starters.
