Weird resolution error, possible driver issue?

A couple of days ago I was messing around on my boyfriend's computer and tried to use Alt Gr + Down to flip his display to freak him out. But for some reason this didn't work. What ACTUALLY happened was I somehow changed the resolution to 800 x 600, which was weird, but what's more weird is that I managed to change it back somehow but the resolution slider still stuck at 800 x 600, even though the computer looks more like 1280 x 1040, no different to how was before. Also, the slider sometimes is stuck at -1 x -1! This also means anything requiring full screen won't run for some reason, including pretty much all games, if I try to make any programme full screen it shuts down.

Plus, whenever I go onto display settings now it gives me this message "The currently selected display driver cannot be used. It was written for a previous version of Windows and is no longer compatible with this version of Windows. The system has been started using the default VGA driver. Please contact your hardware manufacturer to get an upgraded driver."

So obviously I thought the driver is out of date or something. Checking for updates through device manager yields nothing, so I try the Intel website manually for drivers (graphics card: Mobile Intel (R) 4 series family chipset). From here it gets even more annoying: when I try to install the driver from the website I get the message "The driver being installed is not validated for this computer". Hmmm.

I have literally tried everything now. dxdiag comes back with no problems. System restore didn't fix the problem. I've tried three different versions of the driver on three different websites, all the same result. Does anyone have any suggestions? This one's a real puzzler!

Hi,

This is very strange and I am no expert at this, but I have several suggestions.
  • Open up Safe Mode and see if you can change the resolution. The resolution slider should work even if it is in the standard VGA driver only. Safe Mode will only open the standard VGA driver and not attempt any otehr drivers.
  • Run "sfc /scannow" from Command Prompt. If integrity violations were found, upload the logs for me to analyse. See full details here: ttp://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html
  • Make absolutly sure you are downloading the correct drivers. If they will still not install, open the installer in 7-zip (open 7-zip, navigate to installer and double click on installer) Extract all the files in the installer to a folder on your Desktop. If there is an .inf file, right click on it and click Install. This will take quite a while. Here is the link to the free 7-Zip: http://http://www.7-zip.org/
