Solved How can i format my laptop if i don't have any product recovery disc?

Hi,
I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A300-1HP and i want to format. However, i don't have any disk that includes Vista or any drivers in it, as was the case with a previous Toshiba satellite model i owned. I only have the product key for Windows vista home premium, on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop..
So how can I format and have windows vista home premium again? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Anna, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Usually all OEM computers will come with a "Recovery" partition on the hard drive that can be used to do a factory restore of Vista with.

The link below can help show you how to do so on a Toshiba computer. Scroll down to this section below for how. You might also consider create a set of recovery disc as well.

Hi,

If you have a Recovery Partition, then here are the instructions for Toshiba:

"To access the Toshiba recovery partition, power off the laptop. Hold down the 0 (zero) key and turn the laptop on. Keep holding down the zero key until the TOSHIBA logo appears, where you should start tapping the zero key repeatedly. Stop if the unit beeps or when the TOSHIBA logo disappears. The screen should flash ** HDD RECOVERY MODE ** for a split second, then load the Toshiba recovery program right from the hard drive.

Note that this erases all data, and reloads all factory default software. Be sure to back up all your important personal data beforehand"

Thank you for replying so fast.. I just tried what you suggested, but after it started beeping while pressing 0 and I stopped, it just loaded normally, no HDD recovery mode was accessed. Did I do something wrong or does that mean that I have no such partition?

Open Disk Management by typing diskmgmt.msc in the Start Menu search box, then post a screenshot if it here. This will tell us if you still have a recovery partition or not other than your C: partition with Vista on it.

It looks like the 1.46 GB EISA partition was your recovery partition. However, it shows that it's 100% free. Did you format it? It looks like you have no way of reinstalling Vista on your computer now.

It seems that you will either need to try and contact Toshiba for a replacement installation/factory restore disc, or purchase a new copy of Vista. :(

Oh, I see. Yes, it was apparently a failed attempt to format, that i didn't know of, since the person who did it thought he didn't cause any changes.. Thank you for your help, I will be contacting Toshiba next. :)

Hiya, thought i might add another possible solution, as I know how long toshiba can take to respond to enquireys sometimes. since you have a valid serial no on the label with your laptop you can use any home premium version installation disc not just toshibas, the downside is that several of the required drivers won't automaticall be installed as they would with a recovery partition but you can download them manually from the toshiba site as long as you know what model you have and then install them yourself one by one. One other problem i've come accross with this method is that vista doesnt recognise your serial number during installation but don't let that put you off as when you go online for the first time and are asked to activate your version of vista it will be recognised then. Geo
