Vista not recognizing Slave Drive

I recently had a serious crash on my Shuttle61 series desktop which was running WXP Pro. I bought this machine with the OS pre-installed and the store is now out of business. Fortunately, my son just bought W7 for his machine and he gave me his Vista Home Premium Upgrade package and I decided to try it. Installed just fine after installing my trusty old W2K OS as a base, upgraded and its not as bad as I thought! So far only one obvious glitch... the OS is not recognizing my 320Gig "slave" drive which is where a lot of my pictures and data are stored.

I went into the BIOS and the Slave is showing up properly. I also popped the cover off and made sure all connections were snug, but this drive has been working just fine until the Vista install. Connecting external USB drive shows up just fine as well. So I am baffled about why the BIOS is seeing the drive, but the OS is not.

Can anyone shed some light on how to fix this? Is this a glitch in Vista?

I don't know how you can fix that but I do have a question. Is that legal... for you to use someone else's Vista Home Premium Upgrade?

Since I paid for it (the Vista) and the two PCs are in my household, why shouldn't I be able to use it? My son is more interested in gaming performance and he seems to think Vista is a resource hog and W7 is much more efficient. Kids maybe test these things LOL, me I could care less as long as it boots and runs my basic few programs.

I really wish somebody would address the original question though. I would like to get to my data files. There appears to be some similar issues showing up when I googled the topic but they are slightly different in that they tell you to go into the BIOS and make sure the drive is showing up... been there, done that. The drive shows up fine in the BIOS so I know it's not hardware.

Hello pocoloco,
Go to Device Manager and see if there are any yellow triangles next to your Disk Drive.
If there are, un-install the driver, reboot and a new driver will be installed, you could try the anyway, a re-install of the driver may fix it.

Hey Stonys-nutz... The drive is there in device manager but no yellow triangle. I figured why not uninstall and reboot, so I'll try that. Weird how the drive shows up in BIOS and Device Manager, but not in Windows Explorer??? Thanks for your help.

Well... I had tried to reply but somehow it didn't work. I uninstalled the drive which was showing up in device manager BTW, and rebooted. Vista automatically ID's the drive correctly and said it was installing the device driver for it. It is again showing up in the device manager (and in BIOS), but not in Windows Explorer. There was no "yellow triangle" showing up either.

Wow... nobody has a clue? This drive is still showing up in Device Manager and in my BIOS, and not in Windows Vista. And BTW, I activated the Windows Vista directly with Microsoft Support earlier today and tried rebooting several times... no change in drive detection in Vista. The peeps at MS were very nice once they understood my issues with re-installing/re-using my paid for copy of Vista Home Premium.

Is there anyplace else I can go for technical support on Vista where perhaps there's a bit more help with oddball issues like this?
