I have a friend who is having issues with windows vista 64 home edition not recognizing all four cores of processor. Here is what we have done so far:
updated bios
tried to change cores in system config but only giving two core option and we have four.
rma first processor since 3 separate programs(windows, amd overdrive and cpuz) all showed only two cores
checked all appropriate options in gigabyte bios.
All components are compatible. Any help would be appreciated.

What does Windows Task Manager show? This is mine (I have a dual-core CPU). Make sure that you have the option One Graph Per CPU enabled in the CPU History section of the View menu.

only showing 2 cores 2 threads in cpuz. amd overdrive only showing two cores in status moniter. everything correctly identifys the cpu as an amd athlon 2 620. when you enter system configuration it only give you and option for 2 cores not 4. this is the second cpu we have tried so the odds of two in a row bad pretty high. thanks for reply
In addition, you might see if resetting the BIOS/CMOS to factory default settings may help. If not, then also check to make sure that you have the latest BIOS version flashed and chipset drivers installed for your friends motherboard. Sometimes a older version of these may not detect a newer CPU properly.
What is your BIOS revision version? This is displayed briefly when you power your system on. According to the CPU Support list for your motherboard, this needs to be F4 (or newer) for your CPU.
Incidentally, have you got your motherboard model correct? I think it should be GA-MA780G-UD3H.
