understanding & keeping ontop Malwayrebytes

Hi guys

been trying to get my son to understand and look after his PC
am sure you can all imagine how that goes LOL

Downloading Malwarebytes :D and trying to get him to use along with his current AV .. i am still finding on a weekly basis that running Malwarebytes im finding multiple errors & a attached file

could u guys explain bit more for me about this and advise of how, if i can resolve these issue's
i will weep on trying to educate my kids about safe PC useand carry on using Malwayrebytes also

Hi,

These problems seem to be stemming from toolbars and smilies. This is probably due to your son downloading the advertised smilies that pop up. I would therefore recommend uninstalling the "MyWebSearch" toolbar from ALL browser. Once it is completely gone, run Malwarebytes again. You will probably pick up more viruses. When you run it again after that, if the errors have dwindled (maybe to none) then the problem is being resolved. If however, the errors have not lessened, then the "big daddy" virus is still loose and reinfecting your computer.

EDIT: Wanted to included this earlier, but keyboard packeded up so I sent my post anyway: If your son is using Internet Explorer, I would strongly recommend using a different browser such as Chrome or Firefox.

shadeyB, another approach that's simpler may be to use Sandboxie. Especially if your son's PC runs a 32 bit OS, Sandboxie is pretty solid. It takes a simpler approach. It just redirects disk writes to a Sandbox folder. You don't have to run the whole system in a virtualizatonalizerthingy. In fact it makes an icon to run the default browser sandboxed. On 32 bit systems, since it can patch the OS kernel, it's just about bullet proof.

I've been using it for years. The latest release also supports 64 bit systems, but the protection is not as strong since Patch Guard won't let it patch the kernel.

Internet Explorer is a very insecure browser, and many viruses will target it because it is made by Microsoft. Other browsers, in particular Firefox, Chrome and Safari are far, far more secure. It may take you a few weeks to get used to a new browser, but all your old features are there. In theory, Safari and Chrome are slightly faster than Firefox at the moment, but I like Firfox. They are all free and very easy to use.

I certainly don't agree with your assumption about Internet Explorer being insecure Richard. The new version 8 of it is very secure and has many more features to keep it secure than before.

Yes it will get attacked more because it is the most popular browser and is by Microsoft but that doesn't make it a rubbish browser.
In fact recent news has been focusing on Firefox because it is so insecure and takes a long time before it gets patched, at least with IE when a bug is found it is very quickly patched which to me says a lot.;)

If you like IE you should give MaxThon a look. It uses the IE engine but it had Tabs and tons of user-written AddOns way before IE went tabbed. There's a whole community coming up with little gizmos to use with it. The easiest way for stuff to get in is through the browser generally, so if you're on an unknown site it's good to have some kind of filter or sandbox going. In Firefox I use NoScript. But if I'm surfing the unknown I also run it sandboxed.

Even if you decide not to use MaxThon you may have fun looking around. There's some cool people messing with it. Every now and then I try it out again. But I have so many AddOns now with Firefox I'm pretty locked into it.
