System partition removal

I tried to search but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I want to completely delete partition D: with XP installed on it (original OS, installed before Vista). Disk manager won't allow it and I don't see any way to override it. Can the "active, system, primary" status be changed? What's the best and easiest way to get rid of it? Would it affect Vista boot in any way? I doubt it would since it is on a separate HHD but it's not showing as primary. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hello Minbel, and welcome to Vista Forums.

In Disk Management, you will need to right click on the C: Vista drive and click on Mark Partition as Active. Afterwards, you can use a 3rd party program like the free Partition Wizard Home Edition to delete the D partition and extend E into it of you like.

If Vista will not boot at startup, then run a startup repair and select the C: Vista partition. Be sure that you have what you need to do this before you do anything else in case you need to do it.

I don't see "mark partition as active" when I right click on C: It only appears over D: but grayed out

Go ahead and run the startup repair first and select the Vista partition. Next make sure that Vista starts at startup automatically. Afterwards, you can do the part with Partition Wizard above to remove the XP partition.
