Restore in vista black screen

I had one of my hard drive go down so I replaced it and performed a backup, when it restarted it just showed a black screen. I have since trashed that HD and removed all files from the current one to a 1TB - and am in the process of reformatting it to remove Windows and you cannot delete the folder - then I will re-install Vista and setup the HD for use on my Desktop, thanks for the reply but I have stumble my way to a solution, please do feel free to leave me tips
