Problems after deleting shortcuts from desktop

Two days ago I deleted a few shortcuts from my desktop, now everytime I even try to go to IE, a windows pops up asking me which program do I want to use to open IE - this is happening everytime I try to open a new window and for exapmple i want to go to Google...
Also, one of the shortcuts i deleted is Skype, now if I try to open Skype from the icon I have on the bottom toolbar or form the Start menu, a window pops up saying that it doesn't recognise the program - any ideas of what I've done wrong and if there is a solution??

Thanks!!

Hi Shawn

thanks for getting back to me!
Before I try this, now that I'm home with my PC I can be more specific about what's happening.

Basically for every program i try to open, a window pops up with a list of programs saying 'choose the program you want to use to open this file'.
Now, if I want to open IE and when the window posps up I select IE then it works. What doesn't work is when i try to access the programs, such IE, Skype, Photoshop, Windows Media Centre etc... from my little icons on the toolbar, and the same window pops up, it only has two options: Adobe Reader 9 and IE, no matter which one i select, nothing works.

Also if I'm opening Photoshop for example, it will say: 'choose the program you want to use to open this file' and then below it will have 'Photoshop.exe'
If I open IE, it will have iexplorer.exe (but if I access IE from the start menu it will say 'ssvagent.exe')

This is happening for every program I have...?!?

Do you think what you suggest might fix this problem?

Thanks
Cinzia

Shawn, it worked!!!!!!!
Thank you soooooo much :D

Any ideas why this happened? am i not 'allowed' to delete shortcuts from my desktop if i already have the icons on my toolbar?

You're most welcome Cinziadessi.

Not sure how it was done, but the lnk (shortcuts) file extension lost it's default associations.

If you remove them from the toolbar (which one?), are you able to delete the shortcuts afterwards?
