Killing File Templates

Among the many features of Vista that I absolutely despise, the top is the automatic assignment of file templates. For example, the key attribute that every folder needs is "date created" but none of the templates include this, so I have to manually reassign it every time. On the other and, I never ever use "rating", "tags", etc and have to manually eliminate them. Then when the folders get screwed up as they seem to do repeatedly, I have to do it all over again.

I know what I want better than Microscoft. I want like to set up just one template that is used for every folder, regardless of contents. Is that possible? I've researched the topic for weeks and can't get an answer.

Lucky you. Thank's for the nonhelp. Why is it most of the people who reply to request for help offer no help but simply flap their gums.

I asked a simple question I don't want Vista deciding the columns in the explorer. I want to set 1 filetype and have it used every single time. Is it possible?

Be nice, caputi. Most people who reply offer a substantial amount of help, and there is a ton of information available for you on this forum. I think all Kenny was trying to say is that he thinks your problem is not with Vista, per se, and I agree, because my Vista doesn't have this problem either.

First, you've referred to "templates" but it sounds as if you are really referring to the columns and column headings in Windows Explorer. If that is the case, here are some suggestions for you. By the way, it is my understanding that there are 6 different types of folders (i.e. Documents, Music, Pictures, etc.), and you have to make the column header choices for each type separately:

Column - Customize
How to Change the Windows Explorer Columns and Sort Order in Vista
How to Change the Sort Order for Numbers in File and Folder Names in VistaWindows Explorer - Folder Type Templates
How to Reset Windows Explorer Folder View Settings to Make Vista Remember
How to Hide or Show File Names in Vista
How to Enable or Disable Full Row Select in Vista Windows Explorer

Sort: Click the down-arrow 6just to the right of the word “Name” in the header, OR double-click in the column header to re-set the alphabetical order: clicking twice at the head of the name column ( Starts at A to Z --- Z to A --- A to Z ) sets them in order.

Width: File>edit>view>choose detail>set column # to what you want. If this doesn’t work: select "the size all columns to fit." Needs to be done on each window type. "My Computer", "My Pictures", "My music" etc

From inside Windows Explorer, put cursor in the column header and right click. Menu will open. To find additional choices, select "More."

You can also double-click the head of the name column to set them in alphabetical order.

To move any of the headings to the left or right, select "More."

You can also see the same options in the Tool Bar, View, Choose Details… and move headings.
