My wonderful locking computer

Yes, it locks up. Not sure why I have Vista Home, 32bit.
I'm not extremely computer literate, but if you tell me where to find the info I can do that - no problem.
I try not to have too many windows open, maybe 3 internet and maybe my email, Word, Excell, and a DB manager.
I can be operating just fine and the computer will lock up and it is not consistent with any particular function, but it is consistent in that it happens all day long every day.
My resolution is the Task Manager, but even that can take a minute.

I'll be glad to provide more info, I just need to know the questions.

Has this just started, have you installed any new software/hardware ?.

The problem with a lockup is, it could be software or hardware, its easier to check software so we will do that first.

There are a couple of things you can do, first, follow this tutorial, just to confirm your file system is OK.

Next, try having just one window open, IE as many tabs as you like, if you need to use another program close the one your using, a bit of a pain, but it will tell us if it is a particular program causing this.
Go to Device Manager and check there are no yellow triangles.

Also download this app and run, it will clean your system of any malware.

Malwarebytes.org

Download this app and run, it will clean your system of junk files, and check the integrity of your registry. Backup Registry When Prompted.

CCleaner - Download

Both these apps are free and easy to use.

In addition to the sage advice of Stoney, you may want to type memory diagnostics in search and take the test. As stoney says, it can be anything, but if I had only one guess I would go with memory.

How much memory do you have?

Easier if you fill in system specs, too.

Hi Stoney,

I started to follow your instructions and sure enough on Step #1 - system scan and the verification phase completed 100%. And it says - "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

What do I do now?

Try running it through 3 times, it fixes one file at a time.

At least we are going in the right direction.

As richc46 rightly said, for some reason it only fixes the errors one at a time.
If you run it a few times and you are still getting errors show up, try it in safe mode, (link http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/123496-safe-mode.html) also this startup repair, (link below), will try and repair the file system.

Still run the other two apps, as there may be something that they could deal with causing an error elsewhere.

You may want to check the temperature, if you feel its getting too hot, clean out all the vents and intakes, if a PC gets too hot it can cause lockups.
