Solved Fans permanently on after shutdown

Hi all, this is my first post and I'm not an experienced Vistaman!

I have a custom built media centre which works fine with a wired keyboard and mouse.

1. However, with the wired keyboard and mouse replaced by a wireless USB keyboard and mouse, the case and cpu fans continue to run indefinitely after shutdown (or until the PSU is switched off). This happens even if the unit is cold and turned on and off immediately.

I have tried with two different wireless keyboard and mice systems, one Logitech and the other an unbranded unit and it makes no difference. Both these systems work fine on other computers. So I don't think that's the problem.

BUT... if I leave the hardwired keyboard plugged in (purple plug) whilst using the wireless keyboard and mouse the fans stop at shutdown as normal.

OR... if I plug the wired keyboard in whilst the fans are running on as in 1. above, the fans stop immediately!

I have tried the wireless keyboard and mouse in all the USB ports - but no difference.

Any ideas on this before I flash the mobo BIOS as a starter?

Many thanks

Chris. Intel Core Duo 2.8Ghz, MSI mobo, 4Gig memory, Hauppage HVR 4000, nVidia 9600GT.

Hi,

This is very strange. Is this a recent issue or have you had this problem ever since you built your computer? The only thing I can suggest is that you update your BIOS but I cannot give you a link because your Motherboard is down as only MSI. For your interest the purple port is called a PS/2 port.

Sorry I have not been more helpful, but I will continue to think and hopefully someone else will have a better idea.

Hello Chris B,
The first thing is to make sure that all the connections are as they should be, sounds like it could be a wiring/connection problem.
Consult the MB manual to make sure that USB, Rear and Front sockets, and the single jack plugs are wired up OK. (the right wires to the right part of the MB).
Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

The MC was built about a year ago by a company that no longer appears to be in business. Will check out the mobo type tomorrow.

No problems until I connect the USB wireless mouse and keyboard.

I will also download as much documentatiom as I can to check the USB connections are correctly wired.

Will keep you informed.

Many thanks.

The BIOS upgrade did the trick. Strange.

Many thanks for your responses.
