Confused about Backups, Disc Images, Transfer Wizard etc...

Ok, I really need to know HOW to restore files after a disc crash.

It's currently takes me MANY days to restore all the files/folders/settings to the previous state.

What is the EASIEST way to restore files/folders on a new/fresh install ? System backup Restore ? Off a Disc Image ? Or use the Transfer Files (off External HDD) using the Transfer Wizard ???

I'm cornfused.

Put it on an external hard drive

Update it once a week/month, depending on how many changes you make to your computer
