Start-up / Boot problems

I'm having a problem with my Acer Aspire 5100 with Vista. After turning on the power, selecting the User, and entering my password, the following occurs;

1) Welcome screen for about a minute
2) Black screen with the Windows message "Windows Explorer has stopped working"

When I select "Check online for a solution and close the program" it takes me to a Problems, Reports, and Solutions block entitled 'Download updates for Windows' where I "Click to go online...." This Windows Update website tells me to use my Start menu to check for updates. But at this point I still do not have a Windows desktop with the Start menu.

3) While this has been going on, another Windows box opens with the message "Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working" [NOTE - all of these problems began when I tried downloading from a shareware site for the first time. I suspect Rundll32 has something to do with that.]
4) A minimized Windows box shows up and when enlarged it reads "Microsoft Windows Search Protocol Host has stopped working" This box provides a choice of "Going online" or closing. If I click the going online command the screen goes black and stays that way. If I chose to close the program. This same Search Protocol Host messages returns and returns and...

HELP - I know how to use a computer but don't know what makes them run. Can anyone provide some suggestions for what I can try to resolve this problem.

Shareware site/ First thing make a through Virus Scan.
Then we can get back to making the computer work right, if the scan is negative.

Hi remsport ,

Try a system restore to a point before the problem started.

Scan with Malwarebytes.org the free version is good - install, then update it, do a quick scan .

Thanks for your replies. However how do I start virus/system scans without having a normal screen to work from? Also, I have MCAfee installed and it did throw up some warnings when this all began.

Now, I find out there were warnings from Mcafee about virus. Now, I agree with the prior poster. If you cannot find a clean restore point, format, do a clean install and start over.
