Vista forces Control Panel Home view

Hi everyone,

I have the following problem: My Control Panel keeps using the Classic View instead of the Control Panel Home view. I checked the tutorial about this subject:

I tried the second way (Through the Registry: Through a Download), as i have Vista Home Premium, but when I right-click the Restore_Default_CP_View, it doesn't show Merge (actually, I'm not sure, because I don't have an enlish version...). The other way (The Manual Way) doesn't work either, because I don't have the file HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. When I click Policies, it only shows one more folder, called system. The Explorer file doesn't seem to be there. I tried running as administrator, but that didn't work either.

Hello Gijs, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Using the same tutorial link above, double check at this registry location below also to see if you have the ForceClassicControlPanel entry there. If you do, then delete it, restart the computer, set the Control Panel to how you like it and close it so it will be remembered for the next time you open it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Thanks for the quick reply!

I checked the one with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE instead of HKEY_CURRENT_USER and now it does show an Explorer folder, but not a file. However, this folder doesn't contain ForceClassicControlPanel. It contains four other files: the (Standard) file, and three other files: AllowLegacyWebView, AllowUnhashedWebView, and BindDirectlyToPropertySetStorage. I checked the other HKEY folder too, but nothing there either. Hope you can help!

Do a Find and Find Next in the registry on Computer for ForceClassicControlPanel to see if it may be able to find that entry somewhere. If it does, then delete it and continue searching until it says it's done and restart the computer.


This is what the other 3 entries you listed above are for. If you did not set these in group policy, then you can delete them as well.

AllowLegacyWebView and AllowUnhashedWebView:
Windows Explorer no longer displays Web view templates or HTML customizations (using Folder.htt)

and

BindDirectlyToPropertySetStorage:
In Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, the Content Indexer service cannot index the custom properties of a document

*edit* I'll try the download way, but I don't know how to Merge a file (as I own a Dutch version of Vista, so I don't know what one in the list it is)...
