Blank Desktop on bootup

hi all,
Last night I used my PC in the usual way, logged off as usual....no problems....

I boot up my PC this morning and find that when it gets into desktop I have no icons or no task bar...I do however have use of the mouse and the mouse cursor, right clicking does nothing at all though, I can use ctrl alt del to bring up task manager but i do not know what to do if I am honest :/ I have tried all this in safe mode also but to the same outcome, any assistance anyone can give would be greatly appreciated,

Open task manager and in the applications tab, click on new task
In the create new task window that opens type explorer.exe
See it your desktop comes back

    Its getting old, been upgrading it over the past few years, mainly the ram and the gpu's. Will hold out till some next year before I build another one.
Does your computer come with recovery disks or do you have a Windows operating system installation disk?
I would recommend booting with your repair/recovery disks and trying to restore your system to a previous time since safe mode doesnt work neither.
Before you try the repair option, reboot your computer and after your bios has done its check, before windows begins to load, press F8 to access the advanced boot options. You can try to boot last known good configuration from there.
