Photo gallery can't open this picture

I'm a newcomer to this and any Forum, have read some items regarding Invalid Image problems and have same experience. I have about 100 image in JPEG and TIFF format, all in one folder, which I have used for viewing and printing with no problems. Now images cannot be opened in any programme. Their size is what I would expect for the type of images I use. Have tried loading images back onto camera via memory card but that does not work. What I have noticed is that in the properties of each file, whilst the file size is stated, there is no EXIF data. I have used Picasa 3.5 to view these in the past. Any ideas if these files can recovered please.

Do you have this problem with all such images, or is it just these specific ones? Here is a zipped file containing 2 images, one in jpg format and the other in tif. Can you see either or both of them, and what are they?

And here's another question for you TelMore: Can you see the images in your Windows Explorer when you click on them using any of the "Icon" views? (Do you get a thumbnail view or an icon?)

Dwarf Thank you for prompt reply. The TIFF you sent is a red squirrel and the JPG is the Ice Cream Cornet. Opened both OK in CS3 and saved to a folder. However Picasa would only show the JPG. There are plenty of other TIFF files stored and they display in Picasa OK.

Imperfect1 Looked in Windows Explorer Icons show all images including the two from Dwarf detailed above but none of the images I'm having problems with.

TelMore, if you're using Office 2007, try viewing the images in Microsoft Office Picture Manager (located in Microsoft Office Tools). It is a FABULOUS photo editor and should display everything in your system. (If you're using a previous Office OS, then you should have Picture Manager's predecessor on it -- Microsoft Photo Editor -- equally as good as Picture Manager!)

Hi TelMore,

Can you zip a few of your images and attach them to see if we can view them? Include a couple of each format type. I wonder if the file headings have become corrupted.

Using Office 2007, tried using Picture Manager, it would not open the images I'm having problems with but opened all others OK.

Hi Each image is quite large and cannot ruduce or they do not compress a great deal. I have tried to attach one image 2.85 MB but cannot see it as an attachment to this message but the dialogue shows it as a current attachment I will try to send and hope.

Thanks. I've had a quick look. As you state, the image does not open in imaging programs. I've had a look at the file contents in Notepad, and I'm afraid that it doesn't look good.

This is what I see with this:

As you can see from the comparison, virtually all of the data is missing from your file. I shall check this on my computer at home with a hex editor later on (I'm at work now).

Have you tried Irfanview ? It is a very good copyrighted free graphic program.

TelMore, the situation is obviously not looking good. I'm assuming that you've got a corruption somewhere in your system that's affecting these images. As a caution, to protect the rest of your images and your other files, back everything up, so that you don't lose more files.

Second, using Vista Home Premium, you don't have the ability to view previous copies, but you can use Shadow Explorer - ShadowExplorer.com - Downloads – Shadow Explorer is an alternative program for "Previous Versions" (Shadow Copies), for those editions of Vista that do not offer Previous Versions or Shadow Copies. Tutorial: Recover lost files with Shadow Explorer « How-To Geek Forums (Also, here's a copy of the manual - ShadowExplorer.com - Manual - “How to” booklet to utilize Shadow Explorer)

In addition, there must be numerous file repair applications -- perhaps some other folks will make some suggestions, and you can also check the Free Software List for Vista thread here in Vista Forums.

Also, as a last resort, you can try a System Restore to a date before the problem started.

Dwarf Did you get a chance to look at this file with your hex editor. I have had no joy with any other program.

TelMore, have you tried uploading and opening these pics in any other computer? At least if you do that, you'll know whether the problem is within your system or is with the pictures themselves. (My guess is that the images are corrupted,

and that you won't be able to open them anywhere.)

I've had another look, and I'm sorry but there is nothing that I can do.

It would appear that the file headers have either become corrupted, or that they have been deleted from the file altogether.

A tip to prevent this happening again - save your raw image files to a folder on an external HDD and/or to a CD-R. Should you lose them again, you will have backups. If you do any image editing, always do so on a copy, never the original.

Again, I apologize that I was unable to recover the image you sent me.

The image he supplied does not open in my home system, or in my computer at work - see my earlier post above.

Do you have the option Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in colour checked - see http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/84215-folder-options.html

Do these files show up displaying in a different colour? They will not be compressed, since JPEG files are already compressed, but they can be encrypted.
