Change to C:\ Prompt from C:\Users\username> Prompt

I was a Mac guy back when some of you mavens were using MS-DOS. Whenever I bring up a command prompt with Vista it takes me to "C:\Users\username>". How do I change it to "C:\" so I can run some of the fix-up utilities like bootrec.exe? I thought the CD command did it, but I couldn't get it to work.
