Set the only active admin account to regular user

Hi folks,

Need some help. I stupidly set the only active admin account to regular user (scenario 4 in this tutorial). Following the instructions to fix this doesn't work because everytime I try to do something I get a window that asks for a password for "ASP.NET Machine Account". I have no idea what the password for this account is and leaving it blank doesn't work. I have a standard login now that won't allow me to create a new account of any sort nor can I make changes to my standard user account without permission from the ASP.NET Machine Account.

Am I screwed?

*edit to add* This is on my Sony Vaio laptop running Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

Thanks,
Ron

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the link and the help. I downloaded the program, burned to cd, then booted the laptop to the cd. In the window that opened I cleared all passwords and then rebooted the pc. Nothing is different though. The pc boots into my account without requiring a password just like it did before. When I try to do anything it asks for a password for the ASP.NET Machine account. I left that blank and clicked ok but it says the password is incorrect.

Any ideas?

As an aside that looks like a pretty cool program if it does all that.

Thanks,
Ron

play with some of those settings might help in this situation
alternatively right click on computer go to manage. in there click on user accounts and see what you can do

That brings up the same window asking for the password for the ASP.NET Machine Account. I'm thinking I'm just going to have to try the recovery cd and do a reinstall.

Thanks for the help and suggestions guys. This is a pretty cool forum.
(Especially when nobody told me how dumb I was for screwing up my pc). :)

It wasn't your fault. Computer are and always will be a learning process. Without mistakes how can we learn from them.

I can tell you one thing I've learned. Make sure all my pc's have at least two admin accounts that I control. lol

In the process of doing a system repair on the laptop. Hopefully that will do it.

I've learned at lot on this forum though. I found out how to make the "real" administrator account visible in Vista. Already got that working on my desktop. As soon as the wife is done on her pc I'll go do the same thing there.

Thanks again guys!

*edit to add* Running the system restore after booting with the recovery disk did the trick. I have my account back as admin again. I should have done that to start with but if I had I wouldn't have found this site. I'm sure I'll need help again sometime!!

My Computer

I always find making the local admin account have no password helps, then the standard user can only login using safemode, or some real know-how.
But learning is good, go for it
