Solved Unable to open zip files in Vista

Hello

Since installing AVG 9 I have a few problems, one which is now known to AVG that attachements cannot be sent in the likes of Yahoo and Sky Mail, this has gone to the developers.

This one may not be AV related so thought I would ask here.

I have been unzipping files in Vista with no problem, after the download of AVG 9 I am unable to open them.

When I right click on the file I do not get Extract all in the list.

I do not know which is the program that opens zip files within Vista and so I am unable to tell it which program to Open with.

Can any help me please.

Thank you Shawn for you welcome and for the info.

Will give it ago later, looks a bit scary, to my shame I have never created a restore point, that in it's self is going to be so useful.

I am a very new to Vista as you will no doubt guess and now they are dangling Windows 7 at me :shock:

You're welcome. It's not hard at all though. You would just download the ZIP .reg file and doubleclick on it to merge it, then restart the computer to apply. I guarantee that it is safe from here and will not harm your computer since it's just restoring the default ZIP settings and associations. :)

Another option is to download and use the free 7zip (7-Zip). It will appear in your right click context menu. This is also useful the day you have to unzip a .rar file (which Vista does not do with it`s facility).

Starting in WinXP, and now in Vista, you can just double click a zip file and it will open. You can copy the folder to somewhere else.

So if you have george.zip, double click on Windows opens the zip file and you see the folder and files inside that zip file. let us say it is George012. File and folder structure is preserved.

You can now copy and paste, or drap and drop George012 to the C:\, your Documents folder, etc.

No need for an unzip program. It is when you want to zip a file that you need the software to compress it.

Vista does not handle .rar files. For that you need 7zip or Winrar (which costs). Also no need to paste the file after double click just go to "extract files".

True, it was just to explain the additional capabilities of 7zip. Because when someone gets a .rar for the first time, they usually don`t know what to do. I was just trying to look ahead and be helpful.
