Vista Won't Boot After Restore

I have a friends Toshiba Satelite A205 running Vista Home Premium 32bit. It froze up on him several times so he ran his Vista Recovery discs to perform a repair. It would not repair the problem and gave him this information:

Problem Signatures:

02: 6.0.6.001.18000.6.0.6001.18000

OS Version 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.1

He went ahead and used the Recovery disc to reinstall Vista (leaving partitions in tact).

It would not boot after install performed. Froze in the Windows Progress Bar Screen.

He then ran the Recovery Disc again, this time formatting the Hard Drive and erasing all partitions.

The system then brought up 'Loading Files Screen' but instead of proceeding to the WIndows Vista Setup Screen next it instead freezes on a black screen with bold message at the top which said something like FILES LOADING PLEASE WAIT. (Sorry, we forgot to right that one down).

So that's where we are with it. You turn on the laptop and it still freezes in the Windows Progress Bar Screen.

We took it to a computer repair shop and ran a diagnostic to see if there was a hardware issue to which it came back negative.

I am not super experienced with computers but I have reinstalled XP numerous times. This is my first go at Vista so I am at a loss.

this is a hard ware issue.. something wrong with your hard disk.. on start up run the diagnose on your machine
On start up logon to bios
Boot the system up and hold down the‘Esc’ key, then press F1 when you get the check system message
Run the hardware test and post if there is any errors

I did that and I think this is what you were looking for.

"Picture Deleted"

Just as a side note. When you try to open it in Safe Mode it freezes on the CRCDISK.SYS File.

no thats your start up menu.. when you see this screen loading up hit the F1 button and go to the bios.. thinks for Toshiba its F1... then on the Bios run an hardware test.. by the way do you have a spare harddisk you can try on this laptop? if yes put the other hard disk and try to install the windows..

Thanks for the redirect. It took a couple of tries but I finally got it to go to the Diagnostic. It's running now. I will update when its complete.

when you put the vista disc in to install go to the diagnostics page where you will get some options. open up a command window and type in
cd\ (press enter)
type sfc /scannow (press enter) - this will scan the windows files for errors and fix them automatically. If that doesnt work go to the command prompt again
type cd\
C: (press enter)
chkdsk -r (press enter)
This will check the hard disk for errors (and will fix them but may take about 4 hours + to complete)
Also is the disc scratched in any way, shape or form. If so clean it, repair it or replace it.
Is the pc still under warranty?
Get back to us after you have done all of this.

The response after sfc /scannow was "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."

Attempted chdsk numerous times but it always comes back with, "Path, drives or files not recognized."

Disc is brand new. No scratches.

Two months out of warranty.

I think with the chkdsk /r you needed to be in the right drive path (so wherever you installed the MBR on - typically the C: drive) so it should look like this: chkdsk C: /r
so try doing a long format this time, you want to format it into the NTFC format (which vista will only let you do anyway for SATA drives) then reinstall

If that doesnt work try slipstreaming your vista disc with Service pack 1 for vista and integrating any and all the relevant drivers obtained directly from the laptops website
There are many guides and software apps for Slipstreaming. It is legal (because you paid for the OS when you bought the pc i presume). This should overcome any driver conflicts.
Just type slipstream vista
I think there's a free program called nlite or something like that out there, just have a look.
To me I think that you have a hard drive fault, or a vista disc fault, or some other hardware fault. most likely the first 2 option. i suggest buying another hard disk, (and get an enclosure - that way you can have an external hard drive for the price of an enclosure and another hard drive to fix the problem)
Or buy windows 7.
Try the chkdsk C: /r firstly then try the slipstream that fails replace hard drive then if that doesnt work replace disk with Windows 7
