Newbie - Several Problems

Hi,

I'm new to this forum. It's nice to meet all of you.

I was having trouble with my computer and had my sister's ex fix it. I think it overheated or something. So, while the original problem was corrected, I was left with several new ones and he won't return my calls.

1. When I right-click on the desktop or within the Documents Folder (or similar folders), I no longer have the option to create a "New Folder". When I choose the "New" option, it reads "empty". I saw someone had a similar problem on here and they were given a registry fix to download and merge, which I did, but it did not help me. When I am in the Documents Folder, I do have the "Organize" option and can do it from there, but that doesn't help me to create New Folders on the desktop.

2. I can no longer choose a default printer, so while I can print from some programs, others say that I need to install a printer (Adobe Reader, Paint Shop Pro X2, etc.). I have an Epson Stylus Photo R220 installed. And it does print and prior to the computer getting "fixed", I did have the green checkmark on it as a default. I saw a post with someone having a similar problem and they were told to go into Regedit to check out permissions on the Hk-something, which I did, but all permissions seemed to be correctly checked. (....software/microsoft/windowsnt/device or something like that)

3. When I let the computer sit for awhile or I turn it off for the night, when it comes back on, the screen stays dim for a bit, then starts to slowly flicker and then it flashes quickly and then becomes bright and normal. It stays bright and normal until the next time it puts itself to sleep or I shut it down for any real length of time. Sometimes it stays dim and/or flickers for a longer time period than others. Using the computer seems to make it go faster, but when the flashing starts going hard and fast, it hurts my eyes to look at it.

4. I have a slave drive that was getting really filled (it was showing red). Now, it has disappeared from the "My Computer" section and I cannot find it. I don't know how to access it to take some things off. I have all of my photos and graphics on there and I'm scared of losing them.

I have AVG pro and use it for a Firewall. I use Spybot. Both come out clean. The computer is set to defrag automatically.

Thank you in advance for any and all help/advice that you have for me. I know there is a lot wrong. I use the computer heavily for digital art and for playing Everquest II. I can't afford a new one or even to bring it somewhere to get it fixed. Thank you.

Hi melissa, try to seperate the issues and post them to specific groups.. you will get better response..

I think your overheating problems has left you a near dead PC.I think you need to replace.
