hello to all!!! new to this not a techie but will give it a bash.i have a dell dimension c521 the other day i downloaded update program for virgin pc guaurd anti-virus software.after install i couldnt get onto internet,so i did a system restore, everything was resetting then the system crashed,it will not boot up now,i have tried to start in safe mode but when it goes by the microsft load light bar (before vista logo) the screen is just blank left it for hrs nothing happens.i would appreciate any help . cheers tam

It sounds like you may need to do a Factory Image Restore.

it won"t let me do a factory reset when f8 is pressed there is no option to reset there is safe mode,safe mode networking,safe mode command prompt,enable bootlog,enable low res video,last known good configuration,directory services restore mode,disable auto restart on system failure,disable driver signature enforcement & start windows normally.when selecting any these then it will launch to windows corporation light bar then black screen with mouse pointer then nothing.

Did you ever create a set of Dell Vista Recovery discs? If so, you can boot from them to do the factory restore with.
If you can get Vista started, you can also run the Dell OS Recovery Utility to do a factory restore from.

no i didnt make a recovery disk, i also cant get vista to start to make one,i was supplied with a operating system dvd (reinstallation dvd) which says to reinstall the operating system.i dont know if this is the same as recovery disk!!but when i insert it nothing happens.i have an old tiny computer when you insert recovery disk you press Y to start it (as soon as system starts )is there a button you need to press, if this is the correct disk.or will i need to contact dell for disks.sorry for any hassle as i said quite new to this,as system has ran perfect for 2.5yrs.but i will not be beaten.
p.s when i got system it was installed with basic but i bought update to install home premium would this have anything to do with no factory set option on f8 key (advanced boot options )

shawn since last post i have installed operating cd ,restarted computer ,pressed f12 which took me to new menu with option to boot from cd/dvd which i did and looks like i am in middle of installing windows (slow process) however a least am getting some progress.ye ha will let you know how i get on

The reinstallation DVD sounds like what you may need, but it will most likely be Vista Basic since you said that is what your computer came with. it worked i now have a copy of basic,but i also have my original files and settings in folder named old windows files.on c drive am i better just backing up my files to external drive and using the pc restore in tools folder on recovery (d) partion and bitting the bullet to start afresh,or is there a way to system restore using old settings or will that just give me more trouble.but a would like to thank you for all your help and if your ever in glasgow i owe you a beer.

You can copy any files you want back from the C:\Windows.old folder into your current Vista Basic, but you will need to reinstall any program that you wanted back instead.
