Solved Vista Home Premium 64 SP1-Programs & Features show double entries

I just noticed on my fairly new HP laptop that Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit with SP1 is showing double listings for most of the installed programs in Programs and Features (ie the Add or Remove Programs in XP).

What is wrong, what is the cause, how can I fix it?

Hi Brink,

As I am warming up to deleting entries based on your advice, a scary thought flashed thru my mind.

Could one of the double entries for each installed program be a "fake" or "surrogate" such that if I delete the wrong entry I will be in more trouble than when I first started? If so, how do I tell which is the one to keep and which is the one to delete?
