I was trying to help a friend that had the Total Security Malware yesterday. After running Malwarebytes and getting rid of it, I decided to do some cleaning and updates on his laptop.
Everything was going smoothly until it was time to restart after the SP2 update. At first (before shutdown) it began to install some components, it restarted and began install some other updates, later the SP2 update began but after about 30 minutes, the counter was still at 0%.
Of course, I got a little miffed and worried at the same time so, my first reaction was to shut down and restart to see if it would pick the update up again... it failed 3 more times at the same spot (0%) even when I tried to go to Safe Mode.
Finally I was able to get into safe mode and I tried to use a Restore Point to no avail. Much to my dismay
it said that I had no restore points to use (I thought windows created restore points before doing updates???). One thing I noticed though, while on the desktop, it said I was using SP2, which btw, it striked me as odd since it never finalized.
So I tried shutting down one more time and restarting normally, this time, I was able to get to the LOGIN screen so I thought I was now safe but, so far , almost 45 minutes later the screen is at the WELCOME and the little circle is hovering or circling around but it doesn't get to the desktop.
My friend told me to go ahead and re do the whole thing but I am afraid that even if I do that, I am going to get to the point of I am going to need to update to SP2 (or rather he is!) and the same problem will occur.
Can anybody give me some tips as to how to get rid of the SP2 from where I am now?
Thanks
