Vista freezing on re-install

Afte updating to SP2 my computer then stoppe dstarting up. I have tied booting in safe mode, and system restoring after startup repair....none work. So I'm going to reinstall vista and changed the bios to boot from cd , click install then choose te language but it get stick on the next screen of 'please wait...'

I'm reading through some of the tutoials and I think it may be because I have SP1 installed that it won't reinstall. There is details of a slipstream Installation DVD needed, will this work if I can't even start up windows? and is there any other way because I don't really have access to another computer to make a DVD like that.

When I try that I can do step 4 but it get's stuck before step 5. to be honest i don't think I have a product key on my disc.

sorry, but how do I do that? On the Vista install screen it did have a 'repair' option so I tried this. It said it was checking the disk but went on for hours so I gave up on it.

I didn't check the memory because I fitted a different hard drive and the memory worked with that. Although if I tried to check it I'm betting that wouldn't work. I couldn't get chkdsk to work on the hard drive. I even tried to reformat back to factory settings and it just got stuck there for 3+ hours.

how old is the vista disc in question? I had a ubuntu disc that did just this because it had so many scratches.
