in the snapshot below do you think the icons in the tray look a bit smaller than usual?
does anyone know how to fix this?

It's hard to tell if they are not, but you can change the
Caption Buttons item in
Advanced Appearance Settings to change the size of the notification area icons.

In addition to what Shawn has said, if you adjust the size in this way and the icons become distorted (showing incorrect colours), restart your system and they should return to normal.
