Local D missing

i noticed it initially when trying to resume a file i was downloading. i received an error about the file missing, and tried locating it. Local D (secondary harddrive) was not listed in Computer, Device Manager, or Disk Management. i rebooted and the drive reappeared. i backed up my files to C and tried running an error check. the error check failed randomly and the drive was gone again. rebooting did not make the drive reappear, and has been reappearing and disappearing sporadically since it happened. i tried repairing and reinstalling Vista (Upgrade, not clean), and still nothing. any ideas?

1) Check to be sure that the power plug and data plug are firmly seated.
2) Assuming a SATA drive, try a different SATA cable.
3) Download and run the diagnostic program from your drive's manufacturer.

If all of the above fail, it is time for a new drive.

Is D: a separate physical Hard Drive or are C: and D: on the same Drive?
