New build to replace aging Dell

Hello Vista forums,

I'm still running a Dimension 3000 that I bought back in like 2005. It's slowly starting to fail on me, so I want to build my own PC.

This will be my first build. My budget is $350-$400. I don't need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, or speakers. Just the tower. I do some light gaming, nothing intense. Just Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, and Halo Multiplayer. I want to try Fallout 3 or Crysis (I know it has high requirements, but I'm not looking to run either of the two on max settings. Probably the lowest settings at like 800x600, maybe a little higher res.) If the PC can't run Crysis or Fallout 3, that's fine by me. I just want a PC with a dedicated graphics card so I can get off of the terrible integrated Intel graphics I'm running right now, and run TF2 and L4D at a decent resolution, and maybe medium settings.

My brand preferences:
Processor - AMD
Graphics card - must be dedicated, no integrated please, no preference on brand
Hard drive - Western Digital
Motherboard - no preference, whatever works with an AMD proc
Case - no preference
Optical drive - LiteON or Sony
RAM - GSKILL or Kingston
Power supply - no preference

If anybody could help me put together a build for $350-$400, that would be awesome!

OS not needed, I'll take care of that. ;)

Just to throw in my .02 I would steer clear of the Lite On drives. I have a built more than a few systems for myself and I have noticed that the lite on drives seem to fail quickly and when they do it always seems to be an eject issue where your disc gets caught between the bottom of the tray and the top of the drive and usually turns your disk into a coaster

Before you venture into buiding your own, you may want to check here (Deals2buy: Desktop deals ). Those daily specials change all the time - so check often. The graphics card you may have to add, but unless you are a gamer, the on-boards will do the job. And for a decent game box, you will have to spend more than $400 anyhow.

ha well... i'd have done a phenom II 965 and a 5870 on a cf setup with some patriot memory and a ultra x3 psu all in a coolermaster haf case :D haha

Intel Core i7 860 is vastly better than any Phenom and uses less power at stock, roughly 25-30% less.

Product loyalty is a fine thing. But you can still get more bang for the buck with AMD.
