USB ports not working until reboot

Hi Guys,

Every now and then I have a problem where Vista displays the message "USB device not recognized" when I plug my iPhone on the USB port. It happens with all the USB ports on the machine and rebooting the computer will fix the problem.

Does anyone has a suggestion as to what may cause the problem and how to fix it?
It there a service that I could try to restart instead of restarting the whole computer?

I am running Vista Business SP1 x64.

Thanks for your help.

Open up device manager, search for dev in the start menu, and see if any exclamation marks are listed. Also, run sfc /scannow at an elevated command prompt.

Is this a laptop?

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the slow response but the problem did not occur until today.
Checked the device manager: for a short moment there was an "Apple USB Device Driver" item with an exclamation mark, and then it disappeared.

I ran the sfc command, then tried to plugin the USB device without luck.

I have just removed the INFCACHE.1 file as suggested in the other thread, and then rebooted the computer. This solved the problem but I know that only rebooting would previously fix the problem previously so I am not sure if it is permanently fixed now.

Oh, and this is a desktop PC.

Thanks.

Can you try a USB hub into one of the ports and see if it can power itself?

Hi and thanks for your input. I do not have a usb hub at hand but I can tell you that when the problem occurs, the iPhone is not even charging. So there is probably not even a power output.

The port may be dead which may be a mobo problem. Can you flash your motherboard and are USB settings enabled in the BIOS?

When I reboot, everything goes back to normal until a few days later when the problem occurs again. Plus it happens on all the ports (back and front of the case). It doesn't seem likely to me that it is a hardware issue?

What's the Windows service responsible for USB detection?
I'd like to try to restart that service next time it happens.

That would be plug and play. Try flashing the BIOS.

Shell Hardware Detection is also service that detects USB devices.
