Solved How to address Vista Desktop ?

Hello,

I am new to Vista and in my work I write small programs

In WinXP when I wish to copy a folder to all users I would use

For the Desktop screens:
COPY C:\FOLDERNAME C:\Documents And Settings\ALL USERS\DESKTOP\FOLDERNAME
where FOLDERNAME is the folder containing icons and stuff.

For Start Menu
COPY C:\FOLDERNAME C:\Documents And Settings\ALL USERS\STARTM~1\PROGRAMS\FOLDERNAME

Now I wish to do the same to Vista and Windows desktop.

I need to copy to "ALL USERS" as when installing I would not know the name of the users , so it is best to send to ALL USERS in that computer.

Hope someone here can assist let me know the exact instructions required to do the same for Vista or Windows 7?

Thanks in advance.

Regards
Alan

Hello Alan, and welcome to Vista Forums.

All user accounts share the hidden C:\Users\Public\Desktop folder, C:\Users\All Users, and C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs for the Start Menu.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello all,

Sorry to bring this same topic up again... to copy a folder to Vista Desktop.

I tried the following ways to address the folder at the Vista Desktop

1. Directory$="C:\Users\All Users\Desktop\"+AGEHomework$
2. Directory$="C:\Users\Public\Desktop\"+ AGEHomework$
3. Directory$="C:\Users\All Users\"+AGEHomework$

where AGEHomework$ is the folder name to be copied.

All three methods failed to show up the folder at the Vista Desktop. Any idea where did I go wrong?

However copying the directory to the Start Menu did work and the folder did show up.

DirectoryStart$="C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\"+AGEHomework$

Hope you can help.

Thanks in advance.

Alan

You don't need quotes or + signs. Were you inputting those?

Dear Frostmour,

Thanks for your response.

The quotes and + signs are just combining the different strings .. so

1. Directory$="C:\Users\All Users\Desktop\"+AGEHomework$
2. Directory$="C:\Users\Public\Desktop\"+ AGEHomework$
3. Directory$="C:\Users\All Users\"+AGEHomework$

means the Directory$ for 3. "C:\Users\All Users\"+AGEHomework$
would take the contents as "C:\Users\All Users\foldername" where AGEHomework$="foldername"

So when I wanted to send a folder to the desktop from c:\foldername , I would use the codes
CopyDirectory("c:\foldername",Directory$, "", #PB_FileSystem_Recursive)

by right, this would copy the folder , foldername, to the Vista desktop. But somehow all the 3 options did not work. So where did I go wrong?

My Computer

I think you have to define an AGEHome folder first. A variable seems to missing.
